The History of Universal Metal Industries

Universal Metal Industries was founded in January 1950 by brothers John, Fred, and Bob Urschel, who were sons of a Yugoslavian immigrant and shoemaker in Phoenix, Arizona. The three brothers pooled their limited business experience and resources to start Urschel Metal Products.

Their first products included metal ductwork, furnaces, coolers and kitchen ventilation fans. One of their first models (the 802 Air-O-Fan) is still made today. Arizona Wholesale Supply Company of Phoenix, Arizona, was their first customer for this new model and today is one of Universal's largest customers.

In 1957, the company changed its name to Universal Metal Industries and shortly afterwards began manufacturing Air-O® brand range hoods. Their growth necessitated a couple of additional moves and in 1998, Universal moved into their current 80,000 square feet factory.

In 1995, Universal acquired the Trade-Wind®  ventilator product line from Bowers-Thermador. This added Trade-Wind's popular low sone, high-performance ventilators to Universal's product offerings.

Today, Universal Metal Industries, Inc. manufactures various ventilation products under the Trade-Wind® and Air-O® brands. There products include Professional Series and Value Series range hoods, wood hood liners, in-line blowers, duct silencers, bath fans and accessories. Universal also manufactures Custom CraftedTM  hoods, liners and duct covers. Universal distributes its products through out North America via a network of regional distributors, appliance dealers, kitchen dealers, remodelers and builders. They also OEM for other appliance manufacturers.

Universal Metal Industries has enjoyed the privilege of solid growth and continues to strive for excellence in all aspects of its business. Throughout the years, the success of Universal has been largely due to the hard work and dedication of its employees.
